Emigration Resources: Getting Out
When It’s Time to Leave
If you’re LGBTQ+, a targeted minority, or otherwise in danger in the United States, this guide helps you prepare to leave.
Your safety comes first. Everything else is secondary.
International Recognition
The Dutch government has reclassified the US as not a safe country. The EU is voting on similar classification.
This means:
- Official international recognition that the US is unsafe
- May make asylum/refugee applications easier for Americans
- Other countries acknowledge the crisis
- Could affect visa acceptance and refugee processing
The international community sees what’s happening. You’re not overreacting.
Current Situation (Nov 2025)
International mail to the US is shut down. Trump tariffs broke international mail agreements. Most suppliers won’t ship to the US anymore. This affects:
- DIY HRT shipments (not arriving reliably)
- Medications from international pharmacies
- International packages in general
Information is heavily manipulated. You can’t find protests or organizing on Google. Feeds are controlled. This means:
- Research visas/emigration using VPN + multiple sources
- Trust peer networks over official channels
- Verify information through international sources
- Use encrypted communication (Signal, not regular text)
Leave before it gets harder. Borders could close. Assets could be frozen. Your demographic could be restricted from travel.

Should You Leave?
You might need to leave if:
Immediate danger:
- Active threats to your safety
- Violence or harassment escalating
- Lists being made of people like you
- Government targeting your community
- Unable to access healthcare you need to survive
- In danger from family, community, or state
Strategic timing:
- Before borders close
- Before assets are frozen
- Before it becomes illegal to leave
- While you still have passport/documentation
- Before your demographic is restricted from travel
You might be able to stay if:
- You have strong support networks
- You’re in a protective location/community
- You have resources to fight/resist
- You’re already underground/under radar
- Leaving would put you in more danger
Only you can assess your own risk.

Safety Planning
Before You Leave
Operational security:
- Don’t announce plans publicly (especially not on manipulated feeds)
- Deactivate social media or go dark
- Use encrypted communication (Signal, NOT regular text/email)
- Don’t tell people who might report you
- Research what you can legally take out
- Use VPN for all emigration research
- Verify info through international sources (US feeds are controlled)
- Join GTFO meeting (Fridays 5pm) for peer support
- Trust peer networks over official channels
Legal considerations:
- Check if you’re allowed to leave (debts, custody, criminal matters)
- Understand extradition agreements
- Know what happens to your obligations when you leave
- Consult immigration lawyer if possible
Once You’re Out
First priorities:
- Register with local government if required
- Open local bank account
- Get local SIM card/phone number
- Find housing
- Register for healthcare
- Find LGBTQ+ community/resources
- Establish routine and support
Stay safe:
- Don’t post location on social media
- Be careful who you tell about immigration status
- Know your rights in new country
- Find legal resources for immigrants
- Connect with expat/refugee communities
For Those Who Can’t Leave
If you can’t leave now:
Survival strategies:
- Go stealth if you can
- Build local safety networks
- Stockpile medications
- Have go-bag ready
- Use encrypted communications
- Join mutual aid networks
- Know your escape routes
Resources:
- Survival Resources - Staying safe if you can’t leave
- Crisis Resources - Immediate support
Common Questions
“When should I leave?” Before you have to. If you’re asking, start preparing now.
“What if I can’t afford it?” Look into:
- Mutual aid funds
- LGBTQ+ refugee assistance organizations
- Work-exchange programs
- Cheaper destination countries (Southeast Asia, Latin America)
- Community fundraising
“What about my family?” Only you can decide. Your safety matters. They can visit. Or they can come too.
“I don’t speak another language.” Many countries have English-speaking expat communities. You can learn. Survival is good motivation.
“What if I’m not sure?” Prepare anyway. Better to have options you don’t use than need options you don’t have.
